Salzburg Day 1- Mozart's Birth Place, Maria's Fountain

Guess what? Salzburg's train station is under construction too! Good grief! The platform we got off at, number 4, is an isolated platform, meaning we had to ride the elevator to the level below us, cross a walkway, then get up to ground level again from the next platform. Unfortunately, there was no elevator to go up! So we had to yet again lug our heavy suitcases up 2 flights of stairs. Then, we walk to the exit, which is a ground below again! Grrrr... so we had to find the elevator to take us down to street level. Geesh!
The taxi ride over was really cheap, considering we are all the way across town from the train station. But that's a good thing, because most of the sights are near our hotel. I was a bit worried when booking the hotel, because everything looks so far away on Google maps. But after we freshened up again, and walked back toward the bustling areas we had seen on the taxi ride here, it was less than 5 minutes walk away! The room is cute and reminds us of a Holiday Inn. Shower stall!!!! Yay! I haven't seen one since I left the States!

Our hotel is located very near the Inner City, where most of the historical buildings (and shopping) are located. We have to walk through a pedestrian-only tunnel to get through, but it has a WC there that's free! In fact, so far we haven't seen a paying WC here in Salzburg (and the map they give you at the info desk actually lists them out too).

Getreidegasse is a very touristy but really cute area in Salzburg. It is part of the Inner City and the buildings are quite historical.
In fact, along Getreidegasse is the house Number 9, where Mozart was born.

There are many shops selling historical Austrian clothing:

As well as MozartKugeln... just check out this window display! Good God!

Austrian wine with gold flecks (reminds you of that Sonoma wine, right?):

We were guessing in Vienna if Salzburg would be more expensive than Vienna, as the town is smaller. We were correct~ in Vienna, you can buy MozartKugeln and EisWein for cheaper than Salzburg, although Salzburg is the town that makes all these products!
Above the Inner City, you can see monasteries built in the hills, stone walls to protect the city from seige in the medieval ages. Angel thinks the tunnel running down the mountain is how the human waste went down (their version of a toilet):

Also, the well-known fortress Hohensalzburg:

The trolley going up to the fortress:

Residenzplatz is the fountain in The Sound of Music where Maria sings and swipes her hand in the water is located. We realized today that she must have been on platform cuz there is no freakin' way that she could have stood at normal height level and even get her hand to touch the water! Hollywood!

A statue of Mozart:

We found a kebab sandwich place within the winding streets of this area, and it was really yummy! It was so good that we had to go back sheepishly to buy another one!
