Venice Day 4- Parents Leaving ;(
It seems on this trip that no matter what day it is, there is at least one European country that is celebrating some national holiday or the like and EVERYTHING closes down. Our parents needed to buy Alilaguna tickets (the only public transportation boat that takes passengers to the Venetian airport) and we thought to buy them yesterday because the lines to buy tickets are always obscenely long and we didn't want to wait in line just in case that takes an extra 1/2 hour. But when we were buying the tickets, the clerk told us that the Grand Canal was to be shut down from 7:30AM to 3PM the next day! For a boat racing! Grrr.... Well, I guess it was good of her to tell us, as that meant that public transportation in Venice was to be completely shut down during that period. So if you had an airplane to catch at 11am, you'd better leave before 7:30AM or you'd have no way of getting to the airport!! Crazy! We don't get why tickets need to be validated before use in Europe, but if you're caught without having validated your ticket, you'd need to pay a hefty penalty.
So we woke up extra early to help our parents move the luggage all the way across San Marco square (Love how there's no tourists whatsoever walking along at 6AM!).
Our parents left early in the morning but our train to Vienna wasn't until 9pm tonight, as we're taking the overnight train. Angel and I walked around Venice the whole day, but really, we think and recommend 2 full days devoted to Venice.
We saw the boat racing, although it seems more like a marathon.
The days just kept getting hotter and hotter and muggier and muggier. We are sad to leave Italy (especially Florence!) but very excited about Vienna!
